Before releasing firmware v4.0, any interruptions when downloading the latest firmware may have resulted in a QR code being displayed on the screen. While this issue has been resolved, below are some troubleshooting steps to get you off the QR code and updated to the latest firmware:
First, try holding the Power button for 10 seconds to turn off your Orchid. Then try turning it back on. If the QR code still appears, please follow this checklist before reinstalling the firmware using the factory boot steps below:
- Use a data-capable USB cable, rather than a charge-only one
- Plug your computer into a power source, rather than running it on battery power
- Ensure your Orchid is charged to at least a 25% battery level
- Use Chrome 153 as your browser
- Plug your Orchid directly into your computer, rather than into a USB hub, dock, or adapter
- Allow your browser to control MIDI devices for the firmware update site
- Close any other web pages or applications (e.g., a DAW) that use MIDI
- Unplug any other MIDI controllers from your computer
If you are using a MacBook with an M-series Apple Silicon chipset running macOS Ventura 13 or later, you need to give explicit permission for new USB or Thunderbolt devices. To make sure your Mac is set up correctly:
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Click Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down to "Allow accessories to connect" and select "Ask for new accessories". This ensures your Mac will prompt you whenever a new device is connected.
- When prompted upon connecting Orchid, click "Allow".
Once you have completed those steps, follow these instructions for recovery and reinstalling firmware:
- Plug your Orchid into your computer and open the firmware update website as usual. Select the most recent version.
- With the unit powered off, press and hold the Loop + BPM + Options dials while you press the power button; this boots it into Factory mode.
- Using the orange Bass dial, scroll down to “Exit to Boot…” and press the dial to select this option.
- You should then see the QR code screen again. This is expected and what we want to see. Forcing the QR update screen this way should hopefully re-register your Orchid on the site and allow the update to go through.
- Click the Start Update button on the firmware site.
Further troubleshooting:
- Try a different USB cable
- Connect your USB-C cable to a USB-A adapter, as this will eliminate any potential power negotiation conflicts when connected to your computer
- Try a computer with a different operating system, if available (MacOS and Windows are currently supported)
- Try a different browser (such as Opera or Brave)
